WHO WE ARE

Eaton Church of the Brethren is a unique family of faith. Part of this uniqueness is found in our combination of diversity and unity. We are a growing multi-generational family made up of those who have been members for many years, as well as many who have just joined us. We have many different backgrounds and yet we celebrate our faith as a community of believers.

In our diversity is also a strong unity. With the Apostle Paul we affirm that,

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4:4-6).

We seek to embrace this diversity of background and unity of spirit. We are an evangelical church that believes:

• in salvation through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ

• in the indwelling, empowering and gifting ministry of the Holy Spirit

• in the servant's heart, the fruit of the Spirit and daily discipleship

• in the authority of Scripture

• in the priesthood and ministry of all believers

OUR MISSION

enabling every person to experience the living Christ in transforming ways

In continuing the mission Jesus placed before his followers when he commanded them, and us, to go and make disciples, we are dedicated to four intrinsic values.

These ongoing values of EXPERIENCE, CONNECT, GROW and IMPACT are interwoven and cannot be taken singly but as a four-fold approach to our call as a local expression of Christ’s worldwide church.

  • EXPERIENCE

THE REALITY OF GOD THROUGH JESUS

Throughout Scripture, God made His presence known to individuals like Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and Isaiah, among many others, as well as to His people, the Hebrews, and to the Early Church. The presence of God powerfully transformed them then, and us still today. We place great emphasis on worship and prayer, sacraments like communion and baptism, and spiritual disciplines to be practiced individually and collectively, while fully acknowledging that our very access to God was secured in Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross on our behalf.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. —James 4:8 (ESV)

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. —Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

  • connect

WITH OTHERS IN A COMMUNITY OF FAITH

In contrast to our individualistic society, we are intentional about connecting with others, because life with God was never intended to be solitary. We need one another in order to be shaped into the image of Christ, so we build one another up with the gifts God has given each of us. We encourage one another, we exhort one another, we pray for one another, we help to meet the needs of one another. Members are not anonymous but are known and know and connect with others. We encourage every member to do life together in smaller groups.

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. —Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. —Galatians 6:2 (NLT)

  • grow

IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND HIS WORD

Just as parents want their children to grow and mature, so our Father wants us to grow. He has provided His Word, the inspired Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, as nourishment for all believers, whether newly born or experienced in years. The Bible reveals God Himself and acts as a mirror, showing us for who we really are, as well as shaping our view of the world around us. We strive to provide various means of understanding Scripture and how we relate to God, through Sunday morning preaching and age-specific and topical classes and studies.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. —2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)

Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. —1 Peter 2:2 (NLT)

  • impact

THE WORLD BY DEMONSTRATING THE LOVE OF CHRIST

The church is intended to be a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness. Where there is hopelessness, we share the hope of Christ. Where there is sin, we share the message of reconciliation through Christ. Where there is suffering and injustice, we carry the burden of God, who has always championed the cause of the marginalized, and we act on His behalf. We are identified as followers of Jesus by our love for one another, and we are marked by our mission of reaching others with Christ’s love.

God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. —2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (NLT)

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. —1 John 4:12 (NIV)
